Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (2024)

Admittedly, one of the main goals inDon’t StarveandDon’t Starve Together is to explore as much of The Constant as you can explore.

Although exploration is such a significant element to playingDon’t Starve,I have to say that exploring the Caves is a feat that feels much scarier than it really is.

For new players who may still be struggling with having enough food or don’t know the best methods of lighting up dark areas, Caves may prove to be a reasonably tricky feat. Players will have access to sources of food and light throughout the Cave system; however, the majority of resources will require players to kill new types of enemies.

The following guide will take you through everything you need to know about Caves, ways you can prepare yourself before you head into the underground abyss and everything you will want to make sure you collect before resurfacing.

Since theDon’t Starve TogetherCaves also contain the Ruins; this guide will also cover everything you need to know about the Ruins in both single-playerDon’t Starve andDon’t Starve Together.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (1)

CHARACTERS WHO ARE USEFUL IN THE CAVES

Before we begin, players might be asking who the most useful characters are to use in the Caves and while the answer is “it depends on your preference,” some characters are going to fare better than others.

Webberbecause there are tons of Spiders.

WX-78because the Caves and Ruins are filled with Gears and it is a portable light source upon being struck by lightning.

Wendyis useful for the battle against the Ancient Fuelweaver because of Abigail.

Winona’s structures can be useful against the Toadstool and Ancient Fuelweaver.

Wortoxprovides very quick and easy travel with his Soul Hopping.

Willowis great for battles that require low Sanity.

WHERE ARE THE CAVES & HOW DO I GET INTO THEM?

Caves can be found inDon’t Starve the base game as well asReign of Giants andDon’t Starve Together. While players can access Caves in the same way in all versions of the game, Caves do act differently in single-playerDon’t Starve than they do in the multiplayerDon’t Starve Together.

Caves can be accessed through Sinkholes, which are displayed on the overworld as a pile of rocks or rubble. Once Sinkholes are mined or unplugged, players will be able to climb down the rope into the Caves. Players will also receive some Rocks and Flint from mining Sinkholes and will begin spawning in Batilisks.

Batlisks are a flying Mob that spawn from Sinkholes at dusk, up to a maximum of six Batilisks. While Batilisks don’t have a lot of health, sitting at 50 health, they are annoying to deal with, so you may want to avoid camping out or basing by an unplugged Sinkhole. Since Batalisks are also found in the Caves, I will cover more on them when I discuss all the Mobs you’ll be getting into quarrels with.

It’s important to note that once a Sinkhole is opened, it can no longer be closed, and in single-playerDon’t Starve each Sinkhole will lead players to a unique Cave, while inDon’t Starve Together all Sinkholes will lead to the same Cave, but from a different entrance. It’s important to note that the SInkhole entrances do not correlate where players will end up in the Cave inDon’t Starve Together. Players can use the Caves to their advantage for quick travel across the Overworld, similar to the Netherworld in Minecraft.

Sinkholes are most commonly found in Forest biomes, Pig Villages or the Mosaic biome. In a default world inDon’t Starve Together, there will be 10 Sinkholes, and the amount inDon’t Starve depends on the spawn or whether players are in Adventure Mode or not.

While players will not see Caves and Sinkholes in theShipwrecked DLC, players can go through Sinkholes inHamlet to reach a Cave System that consists of a series of rooms. Inside one of these rooms, players can find a Stone Plug, which appears to look like a spiral stalagmite rock. Once players mine the Stone Plug, they will have access to one of the Cave Clefts, the entrance to a small Cave, on one of the other four islands.

Note: If you are on aDSTServer and you notice planks of wood on the Sinkhole, this means that there is an issue or error with the connection of Caves and the Forest. If your set-up was previously working correctly, consider restarting your servers. Having your servers restart every few days is an excellent idea because it will keep them both updated as well as lag-free.

HELP! IT’S SO DARK! HOW DO I SEE IN THE CAVES?

Light can be an enormous challenge to deal with while dwelling in the Caves. While players will experience the same Day and Night Cycle as they do in the Overworld, players will only be able to see daylight when there are cracks in the ceiling of the Caves

Players can use the cracks in the ceiling to save the durability of their lighting equipment; however, I would never rely on the surface’s cracks to keep you safe. In single-players, players won’t even have access to seeing the clock, so it can get extra tricky for players who don’t already have lighting items built.

Since I’m not going to cover this elsewhere in the guide, I’m going to let you know that the cracks in the ceiling allow Rain in. So, make sure you hang on to your Eyebrellas or your Umbrellas.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (2)

NATURAL SOURCES OF LIGHT

Though players can rely on their own lighting items like Torches, players will also find areas that are lit by natural Cave spawn, the following are the natural sources of light players can use to keep themselves lit in the Caves:

LIGHT FLOWER

Upon entering the Caves, many players will experience a new plant almost immediately. The Light Flower is a plant that can be found in both the Caves and Ruins.

Players can pick Light Flowers to either obtain their Light Bulbs for lighting-related tools and structures. Players may also use Light Bulbs to farm Manure from Werepigs as they are a quick and easy resource to farm that will get the Werepigs’ IBD going.

The most interesting thing about the Light Flower is that it comes in variants that provide players with a maximum of 3 Light Bulbs. Though variants will give the players more Light Bulbs, it will take longer for said Light Bulbs to regrow.

InDon’t Starve Together, Light Flowers are renewable through Regrowth, though they are not transportable. So, don’t be expecting overworld Light Flowers anytime soon.

Light Flowers are the best type of light fuel you can use for refuelable lighting gear.

GLOW BERRY

Glow Berries are a tricky resource to farm as they require players to kill Depths Worms to acquire. When eaten, a Glow Berry will provide players with25 Hunger,-10 Sanity and 11 Health. Players will also emit a glow for 90 seconds in single-playerDon’t Starve and 240 seconds inDon’t Starve Together.

Warly players can craft Glow Berry Mousse with 1 Glow Berry, 2 Fruits and 1 Filler (that is not Meat or Inedible). Players can technically mix 4 Lesser Glow Berries, but no matter what recipe you choose, the Glow Berry Mouse will provide players with two days of glowing.

Glow Berries and Glow Berry Mousse are somewhat overpowered resources to have, especially if you have some extra Bundling Wrap to keep them fresh.

I would always recommend using Glow Berries or Glow Berry Mousse on yourself before using them on pets inDon’t Starve Together, though I have to admit, I like having my glowing Kittykit by my side at all times.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (3)
MUSHTREES

For you, Mushroom addicts who love using Mushrooms for Health, Sanity or Hunger, I recommend heading to the great down under to find the ever-useful Mushtrees.

Mushtrees have four variations: Blue, Red, Green and Webbed(DST). All Mushtrees drop 2 Logs and a mushroom cap that relates to the colour of the Mushtree. Similar to other trees, players can dig up a Mushroom stump to receive an extra Log, though players will not be able to replant any Mushtrees.

Unfortunately, due to the limitation of being unable to plant Mushtrees, Mushtrees are considered a limited resource in single-player, though inDon’t Starve Together, Mushtrees are renewable through the Regrowth cycle.

Don’t Starve Togetheralso provides players with other methods of farming Mushrooms by adding a blooming state to all Mushtrees, though each variant of Mushtree blooms under different factors.

Blue Mushtrees bloom during Winter at Night, Green Mushtrees bloom during Spring at Dusk and Red Mushtrees will bloom during Summer during the Day. When Mushtrees are in bloom, they will produce Spores that can be caught using a Bug Net, which yields up to 6 Mushrooms when planted in a Mushroom Planter.

Players can store Spores in Snow Chester, Insulated Pack or Chefs Pouch for 30 days or the Glowcap, which we will cover later, for 60 days. Note that Spores cannot be placed into an Ice Box, meaning that players will have to rely on a non-traditional storage unit if they hope to yield the most out of their Spores.

NIGHTMARE FISSURE

Nightmare Fissures appear in the Stalagmite Terrain and emit more or less light based on phases of the Nightmare Cycle. Nightmare Fissures have a chance of spawning in Shadow Creatures and have no relation to the player’s Sanity.

Though Nightmare Fissures provide some light, there’s no real reason you’d use them for their light unless farming Nightmare Fuel.

CRAFTABLE LIGHT SOURCES

In most cases, players will want to rely on craftable light sources as they travel inside of the Caves. Players will have the option of using different styles of light sources as they move through the Caves, though some prove to be much more useful than others.

I personally recommend sticking to light sources that can be refuelled with Light Bulbs as there are a shocking amount of Light Bulbs players can collect while in the Caves. I, personally, travel around with a Bundling Wrap with four stacks of Light Bulbs. It can sound like overkill, but there’s nothing worse than running out of Light Bulbs when you’re on a long adventure.

TORCH

Torches aren’t my favourite method of getting around in the Caves; however, they do suffice for early mapping and exploration.

Much like Night in the Overworld, players will not be able to do any of the tasks they spelunked into the Caves to do, such as Mining Rocks or killing Spiders.

Players do have the option of burning down trees to make sure that the Caves are lit; however, I do warn new players to try this in the Overworld before doing it in the Caves. It can be riskier to burn down trees in Caves, especially if you weren’t stocked up on Log as Logs are much more useful for crafting. Players can avoid the need to farm resources by killing the Bee Queen early (Don’t Starve Together) to acquire Bundling Wrap. Players can receive the Blueprint from killing Bees in single-playerDon’t Starve.

Bundling Wrap is the only way to ensure that players always have the freshest food and the tools they need to explore the Caves.

As mentioned, I would still have the resources for a Torch in your back pocket, just in case, though I wouldn’t necessarily have a Torch pre-crafted, since you’re probably not going to rely on one.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (4)

MINER HAT

In my opinion, the Miner Hat is the most accessible lighting item players can use while exploring the Caves. Unlike the Torch, players will be using their head slot to light up their surrounding areas, making it easy to collect resources at any time. The only concern when using a Miner Hat is that the player loses one armour slot though, in reality, players can easily build themselves Night Armor or a Log Suit for decent protection.

Miner Hats requires an Alchemy Engine to prototype and will need 1 Straw Hat,1 Firefly, and1 Gold Nuggetto craft. Miner Hats can be fueled using Light Bulbs, Fireflies, and Slurtle Slime. I only refuel my Miner Hat with Light Bulbs, since there are Light Plants all over the Caves and they regrow so quickly that it doesn’t matter anyway.

The only character you may want to avoid using a Miner Hat with is Wigfrid, just because her Battle Helms are quite useful, though the reality is that I mostly stick to Battle Helms because I’m lazy.

LANTERN

Like the old man that I am, I’m someone who always carries a Lantern everywhere he goes. Not only do I find the Lanterns skins extra adorable, but I also find the Lantern to be one of the most versatile tools players can use as a light source.

Lanterns take up the hand or weapons slot, though Lanterns can be placed on the ground, providing players with a large area of vision. Lanterns require an Alchemy Engine to prototype and use 3 Twigs, 2 Rope (6 Cut Grass) and 2 Light Bulbs to craft.

The main reason I’m a fan of Lanterns versus a Miner Hat is being able to have multiple pieces of armour to protect yourself. As my blog’s name suggests, I’m a Basically Average gamer who’s skills are… so basic… and… average. So, I’m someone who you want to make sure is completely geared up, because even if I know what the timing is for Mobs around The Constant, lord knows I’m still going to get hit.

Build yourself a Lantern from day one, and you’ll never regret it. It’s quick and easy to make once you’ve got that Alchemy Engine. Or for Wickerbottom players, build it for your friends using a Science Machine.

PUMPKIN LANTERN

I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of Pumpkin Lanterns, though I can see Pumpkin Lanterns being handy for players.

Pumpkin Lanterns require an Alchemy Engine to prototype and will need1 Pumpkin and 1 Firefly to craft. In Don’t Starve Pumpkin Lanterns last for 10 minutes in Summer and 13 minutes and 20 seconds in Winter. InReign of Giants,Pumpkin Lanterns last 8 minutes in Summer, 10 minutes in Spring and Autumn, and 13 minutes and 20 seconds in Winter.

Pumpkin Lanterns, unfortunately, do not provide a whole lot of light, as other methods such as the Lantern and Miner Hat provide a larger radius of light around the player. Much like the Lantern and other lighting devices, players can pick up the Pumpkin Lantern to stop it from losing durability during the day.

All in all, if you have a Pumpkin in your hand as well as a Bug Net, craft yourself a Pumpkin Lantern, otherwise put it aside beebee, because it’s not worth it!

As forDon’t Starve Together, players get crazy long lengths of time on these suckers, getting a total of 42 minutes and 30 seconds in Summer, 53 Minutes and 20 seconds in Spring and Autumn, and 71 minutes and 7 seconds in Winter. During the Hallowed Night Even, Pumpkin Lanterns last 4x the length they usually do, making Pumpkin Lanterns a great source of light for players to place around their main base.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (5)

MOGGLES

Admittedly Moggles are some of the most powerful pieces of equipment players can use while exploring the Caves as they provide players with 12 minutes of Nightvision.

Moggles are a piece of Headwear that requires an Alchemy Engine to prototype and need 2 Moleworms, 2 Electrical Doodads and 1 Glow Berry to craft.

The reason I’m not the biggest fan of Moggles is due to how it reveals the world. Once worn, players will see the world in a red “negative” filter, revealing everything on the map in a harsh manner. Moggles are recharged using Glow berries or Lesser Glow Berries, making them a bit harder to fuel than Lanterns or Miner Hats.

Moggles are by far the best method of making sure players can see in the Caves and Ruins and are recommended if players expect to be exploring areas like the Ruins in all versions of Don’t Starve. If you’ve got a good handle on killing Depths Worms, then Moggles aren’t going to be difficult to regularly fuel.

NOTE: Please make sure you’re watching your Moggles’ durability because they will expire once they reach 0%. Trust me, farming Moleworms alone makes making sure the Moggles don’t disappear is going to be a priority, let alone having to trade valuable resources like Electrical Doodadads.

Moggles can be especially useful for players who hate dealing with Night Hands as putting on a pair of Moggles will immediately destroy Night Hands.

SAY GOODBYE TO HOUNDS AND SEASONAL GIANTS!

One of the biggest perks of living in the Caves is that players will be able to avoid all Seasonal Giants and Hounds. Once players resurface, chances are they will be attacked by a Hound Wave, though players could also be in a battle with a Seasonal Giant depending on what time of the year it is.

Although players will not see a visit from the Deerclops, Moose/Goose and Bearger, players will get attacked by the Antlion during Summer if players are playing Don’t Starve Together. Well, not necessarily attacked, but players will experience an Earthquake when she is enraged.

It’s important to note that if players resurface and a Seasonal Giant is available, such as the Deerclops, players may not hear the “growling” periods. It is recommended that players always have a Walking Cane on hand, or if players have a Winona on their server, Winona players should build some Generators with Catapults near Sinkholes to quickly help out players if they are in need.

SAY HELLO TO EARTHQUAKES BEEBEE!

For players who are planning on hunkering down in the Caves all year round, you should take note that you’re going to be seeing plenty of Earthquakes.

Earthquakes cause a player’s screen to shake, and as they occur, they will drop resources like Rocks, Flint, Nitre, Marble and Gold Nuggets. If players are extra lucky, they may encounter a few Red or Blue Gems, meaning that players will have enough resources for many Magic Weapons and Armour.

Players must stay alert during an Earthquake as they are at risk of being damaged by the resources that fall from the Cave’s ceiling. Though players will not take a great deal of damage, especially if they are wearing adequate Gear, taking damage should be avoided when possible. Players can tell where resources are going to fall by the shadows on the ground. As soon as you hear the rumbling start, start running around to safe spots and pick up already fallen resources.

Now, you may notice that many resources break as soon as they hit the ground; this is normal and unavoidable. Unfortunately, many resources, even those lovely Gems, can break upon landing in on the ground, so “lower your expectations.” *sigh* I will say, it’s not usually that bad though.

The funniest thing about Earthquakes is their ability to drop Moleworms and Rabbits from the ceiling. Rabbits or Moleworms that fall will become stunned, making them vulnerable to attack, though once they are back to normal, they will begin burrowing.

Note: In Summer, while playingDon’t Starve Together, players may experience Cave-ins, which drop Boulders around the player when the Antlion is enraged.

WHAT RESOURCES ARE IN CAVES?

It can be concerning to hop into unknown areas of The Constant, especially if you are uncertain if you can support yourself and keep yourself alive in them. Well, I’m here to say that you shouldn’t have too much difficulty surviving in the caves.

Similar to the Overworld, players will have access to resources such as Evergreen trees, Saplings, Berry Bushes, Grass and Mushrooms, meaning that players shouldn’t have to jump to the Overworld any time soon.

In addition to Light Flowers and Mushtrees, which we’ve covered earlier in this post, players will also come across Ferns, Stalagmites, Spilagmites, and Slurtle Mounds. The following are the resources they provide:

FERNS

Instead of flowers, players will be able to collect Ferns in Caves. Ferns, like Petals, will give the players 1 Health and nothing more.

Oh yeah… eat your heart out, make a Potted Fern. It takes 5 Fern and 1 Broken Shell and requires an Alchemy Engine to prototype. Beautiful, beautiful.

STALAGMITES

Stalagmites and Tall Stalagmites are like Boulders; however, Stalagmites provide players with more resources than Boulders.

Stalagmites have the chance to drop Rocks, Flint, Gold Nuggets, Blue Gems, Red Gems and inDon’t Starve Together Fossils.

If you’ve trained Rock Lobsters, try to stay away from the Stalagmites, since they may potentially eat a Stalagmite, reducing it by one state.

SPILAGMITES

As mentioned earlier, Spilagmites are the official Spider Den found in Caves. Spilagmites have the chance of spawning both Cave Spiders and Spitters.

Although Spilagmites have the chance to spawn either, Spilagmites only have a 33% chance to spawn Spitters, and there is no way to increase the chances of a Spitter spawning, unlike attacking Spider Dens to cause a Spider Warrior to come out.

Spilagmites require a Pickaxe to destroy, and mining a Spilagmite will provide players with Rocks, Silk, Spider Glands and/or Fossils.

Spilagmites are not renewable in any version ofDon’t Starve.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (7)

WHAT ARE THE BIOMES IN THE CAVES?

Five biomes can be found in the Caves in bothDon’t Starve andDon’t Starve Together(if you ignore the fact that the Ruins are part of the same instance inDST).

CAVE SWAMP

Similar to the Swamps in the Overworld, players have access to Cave Swamps in the Caves.

Two different types of Cave Swamps can generate in the Caves, which are known as Spider Infested Swamps and Light Flower Swamps.

Spider Infested Swamps contain the same Spider Dens you can find on the Overworld, Reeds and Tentacles, and Light Flower Swamps contain Tentapillars and Light Flowers, with the rare chance of having a regular Tentacle.

MUSHTREE FOREST

As the name implies, the Mushrtree Forest is the home of all the yummy Mushtrees.

Mushtrees are planted on Fungal Turfs, which unlike many other Turf items, comes in three different colours: red, blue and green.

All plants can be grown on Fungal Turfs; however, green and red Fungal Turfs will prevent Eyeplants from spawning, while blue Fungal Turfs will not.

Oddly, if enough Fungal Turf is placed in the Overworld, they will only attract Crows. So, if you’re in need of a round of sleep darts, you’re in for a treat.

ROCKY PLAINS

Covered in Cave Rock Turf and Guano Turf, the Rocky Plains environment is the source of Boulders and Rock Lobsters.

There is nothing notable about this biome or the Turf it provides players. Cave Rocks prevent Eyeplants, and Guano Turf doesn’t.

STALAGMITE TERRAIN

Similar to the Rocky Plains, players will find Cave Rock Tuft and Guano Turf in the Stalagmite Terrain.

Players will also find lots of Caves Spiders and Spitters who are hidden inside various Spilagmites.

There are two very distinct forms of Stalagmite Terrains, the ones infested with Spilagmites and Spiders and the ones that just contain a variety of Stalagmites filled with minerals.

In most cases, if a Stalagmite Terrain is filled with Spiders, it will lack Batlisks and vice versa.

Note:Don’t Starve Together players will see “Bat Caves” instead of Batilisks, only because there are no other Sinkholes inDST.

SUNKEN FOREST

The Sunken Forest is the final biome found in Caves and contains Grass and Forest Turf predominantly.

The Sunkey Forest contains the majority of resources players will need for survival, including Banana Trees, Berry Bushes, Evergreen trees, Grass Tufts and Saplings.

The only Meat available in the Sunken Forest includes Gobblers, which spawn from Berry Bushes, or Treeguards, which spawn from chopping down too many trees.

I would recommend players venture out to find other Mobs to regularly get Meat from, though players can also transport a single Spider Den, which will provide an ample supply of Monster Meat.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (8)

NEW MOBS THAT LIVE IN THE CAVES

It can be expected that players will experience different types of Mobs in the dark depths of the Caves. Players will witness ten new Mobs in the Caves and a few extras in the Ruins. Alongside the new Mobs, players will also see Spiders, Fireflies and Tentacles. So, get ready for some extra fun for Willow, Wendy, Wickerbottom and Wurt players. Though, if you want to get serious about powerful characters in the Caves, you should think about playing Webber.

While spelunking in the Caves, players can expect to see one of the following new Mobs:

BATILISK

Since Batalisks are the first Mob you will be greeted by when trying to spelunk in the great down under; I’ll start by giving you the rundown on them. Not only are Batilisks found after mining a Plugged Sinkhole, but they can also be found in the Spilagmite biome, which features tall Stalagmites and plenty of Batilisks.

Players in single-playerDon’t Starve should have no difficulty finding the Batilisks as they will most commonly be found near Thulecite Sinkholes, which leads to the Ruins. For DST players, the Ruins are always located on the same level as the rest of the Caves, as Caves inDST are considered one instance instead of many.

Batilisks aren’t usually a problem in the Caves as they can be avoided, dodged or kites very easily. Batilisks also only have50 Health in all versions ofDS, making them especially vulnerable to being killed quickly by players.

If players are on the Overworld, they can try to avoid Batilisks until it is daytime, since Batilisks go to sleep until Dusk. Be careful as Batilisks in groups tend to be problematic and hard to deal with, though with a bit of practice, Batilisks will be easy peasy to sort out!

Honestly, with the majority of Weapons, including a Ham Bat, Tentacle Spike or Dark Sword, you can easily slay a Batilisk in one hit.

BUNNYMAN

Say hello to the Pigs of the Caves, Bunnymen. A Bunnyman is a Mob that spawns from a Rabbit Hutch, much like Pigs from Pig Houses. Unlike Pigs, Bunnymen are befriended only when fed Carrots.

Bunnymen have200 Health and deal40 Damage per hit, and players should be aware that having Meat or Eggs in their inventory will cause a Bunnyman to aggro the player. It doesn’t matter whether the food is made in the Crockpot or is a raw Meat, Bunnymen hate it when you’ve got a dead fellow! To avoid Bunnymen attacking you, think about getting Hutch, Chester or put your Meat products into some Bundling Wrap.

Upon death, a Bunnyman will drop 2 Carrots and has a 75% chance to drop Meat and a 25% chance to drop a Bunny Puff.

Bunnymen are the only Mobs inDon’t Starve that drop Bunny Puffs, and the reality is that Bunny Puffs can only be used for three purposes: getting Gold Nuggets from the Pig King, crafting the Fur Roll and building the Rabbit Hutch.

Fur Rolls require a Straw Roll and 2 Bunny Puffs to craft and are much more useful than Straw Rolls as they provide players with30 Health and50 Sanity for the cost of 75 Hunger. Players will also stay warm and snug in a Fur Roll during Winter, so get your hands on these guys if you don’t already have a Tent.

Rabbit Hutches require an Alchemy Engine to prototype and 10 Carrots, 4 Boards, and 4 Bunny Puffs to craft. Rabbit Hutches act very much like Pig Houses, allowing players to spawn in Bunnymen regularly to farm.

If players are below 40% Sanity, players will be met with Beardlords, similar to Beardlings. Beardlords can be extremely useful for players to farm as they have a 100% chance to drop 2 Beard Hair and 1 Monster Meat, making Beardlords a great way to farm Meat Effigies.

CAVE SPIDER

Coming in with 150 Health in single-playerDSand 225 Health inDST, Cave Spiders are the Cave equivalent to regular Spiders in the Overworld. Cave Spiders are more powerful than regular Spiders, though as they will retreat into their shell after two-hit, absorbing 75% of the damage they receive for a few seconds.

Cave Spiders aren’t necessarily difficult to deal with, they are just annoying. I would recommend making friends with some of them if you are playing Webber because hostile Mobs will often aggro them and continue attacking until they are dead. What does that mean? Well, it means that while the Cave Spider takes reduced damage, other Spiders can continue damaging enemies at full damage.

In my opinion, the only issue with Cave Spiders is that they only deal 20 damage, which is underwhelming with the reality that other Mobs can deal a great deal more.

Note:Players can also wear a Spider Hat if they want to control Spiders and are not playing as Webber. Just make sure that you keep your eye on their Spider Hat’s durability because as soon as the Spider Hat disappears, players will become aggroed by the Spiders.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (9)

DANGLING DEPTHS DWELLER

Dangling Depths Dwellers can be tricky to spot, though players will see them more frequently in the Military and Labyrinth biomes (in the Ruins) though they also between appear in Mushtree.

Players will be able to locate Dangling Depths Dwellers from their webs on the floor, though Dangling Depth Dwellers do not have a “home” they spawn from, like a Spilagmite or Spider Den.

Dangling Depths Dwellers often surround Ornate Chests and in single-player Don’t Starve players will be able to destroy their spawn points by lighting anything on fire in the center of the wet, however, players will not be able to destroy them inDon’t Starve Together.

Dangling Depths Dwellers have200 Health in single-playerDon’t Starve and 400 Health inDon’t Starve Together. Dangling Depth Dwellers deal small amounts of damage, coming it at 20 damage.

As for attacking Dangling Depths Dwellers, there’s nothing too exciting when it comes to these creepy crawlers, so get to smacking and collecting the Monster Meat, Silk and Spider glands they have to drop.

Notably, one of the most interesting parts of the Dangling Depths Dwellers is the fact that they convert nearby blue Mushtrees into webbed Mushtrees, ultimately making Spiders spawn from the Mushtrees once chopped down.

DEPTHS WORM

If you thought that you could escape the wrath of Hound Waves in the Caves, guess again. Instead of Hounds, players will have to deal with Depths Worms, which are a hostile Mob that periodically spawns around both the Caves and Ruins.

Players will receive a warning before they are attacked by Depths Worms, and the rumbles will grow more frequently as they get closer to players.

Also similar to Hounds, players will be attacked by Depths Worms more frequently and by more as time goes on. The shortest period players will wait is six days, and the longest is 17 and players will see a maximum of 5 Depths Worms while being given a minimum of 30 seconds notice.

Depths Worms will seal out harvestable resources to eat from and will steal all foods that are in its vicinity. So, it is recommended that players deal with Depths Worms as quickly as they can in order to avoid their resources being taken away from them.

Although I’ve shat on them in the past, some players recommend using Bee Mines to deal with Depths Worms. According to the Fandom, the player will require around 5 or 6 to deal with a single worm. Not useful, in my opinion.

Depths Worms provide players with 4 Monster Meat and 1 Glow Berry upon death. It’s no surprise at this point that Glow Berries are extremely useful while travelling in Caves as players can eat them to radiate light for 90 seconds (single-player) or 240 seconds (DST).

I recommend Depths Worm farming inDon’t Starve Together specifically, because damn are Glow Berries nice, especially if you have a Warly on your team.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (10)

ROCK LOBSTER

Say hello to my absolute favourite followers players can train inDon’t StarveandDon’t Starve Together.

Rock Lobsters come with a whopping 1125 to 1800 Health in single-playerDon’t Starve and2250 to 3600 Health inDon’t Starve Together. Rock Lobsters deal between 56.25 to 90 damage per hit.

Why such a difference in Health and damage? Well, Rock lobsters grow over time, growing fully after four in-game days, fairly similar to Beefalos.

Rock Lobsters can be annoying to kill as they have the ability to camouflage, absorbing 95% of the damage players deal to them and passively regenerating 10 Health per second.

Although I mention that Rock Lobsters are annoying to kill due to their camouflage mechanic, their camouflage mechanic is what makes them one of the best Mobs to train inDon’t Starveas Rock Lobsters will use their camouflage mechanic to their advantage when against groups of Mobs. What do I mean by that? Well, chances are Mobs you’re up against will target a single Rock Lobster, who will go into hiding. When said Rock Lobster is camouflaged the other Rock Lobsters will continue beating the Mobs, giving the hidden Rock Lobster enough time to heal up.

If enough Rock Lobsters are trained on your team, there’s going to be minimal chances of the player being hurt or killed. Keep this in mind, especially as we start talking about the Cave bosses later on in this post.

How do you train a Rock Lobster though? Well, you can train them using any minerals including, Gold Nuggets, Rocks, Flint, or Gems.

Each mineral will provide players with 3 minutes of loyalty, though Rock Lobsters can be trained up to 2.5 days at a time.

Since Rock Lobsters are extremely powerful, they have a built-in mechanic to help prevent abusing their power. After two full days of being awake, Rock Lobsters will sleep for about half the day. Note that a Rock Lobster can fall asleep at any point and does not depend on the day or night cycle, meaning players may witness their Rock Lobsters falling asleep midway through a battle. Eek!

Players will be able to bring Rock Lobsters to the Overworld in single-player Don’t Starve, however, they will not be able to bring them to the Overworld inDon’t Starve Together.

Upon death, Rock Lobsters will drop 2 Rocks, 2 Flint and 1 Meat (wtf?), making them useless to farm. Use these guys are your allies, but don’t get into a fight with one… ’cause chances are you’re going to be donezo!

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (11)

SLURTLE & SNURTLES

Slurtles, identified with their pointed shells, are one of the most annoying types of Mobs players will interact with while in the depths of the Caves. While Slurtles are neutral Mobs, Slurtles act similar to Moleworms and Frogs combined.

Spawning from Slurtle Mounds, Slurtles will make their way to Minerals that are scattered on the ground (except for Marble) and will start chowing down on them. If Slurtles are around and there are no Minerals on the floor, Slurtles will begin attacking players and if players are successfully attacked by a Slurtle, players will drop a rock (or another mineral) out of the player’s inventory and will start chowing down.

The most annoying part of Slurtles, in my opinion, is the fact that they can eat minerals out of backpacks and chests, so players will have to make sure they are always keeping an eye out on their resources, especially if they choose to base in Caves.

Slurtles have 600 Health in single-playerDon’t Starveand1200 HealthinDon’t Starve Together. While Slurtles do not do a whole lot of damage, being 25 Damage per hit, they can retreat into their shells, which absorbs 95% of the damage dealt to them.

Upon death, Slurtles will drop 2 Slurtle Slime, a Broken Shell or at 10% chance for a Shelmet.

Shelmets are one of the best drops players can receive from Slurtles as they absorb 90% of the damage dealt to players and have 750 HP in single-player and 525 HP inDST.

Alternatively, players may be approached by Snurtles, which are identified by their smooth rounded shells, which act almost exactly like Slurtles.

The main differences between Snurtles and Slurtles are that Snurtles have200 Health and their shells will only absorb 80% of the damage dealt to them.

Snurtle Shells have a 75% chance to drop, but being that Snurtles are rarer than Slurters, players may rarely see this resource. Players will still receive 2 Slurtle Slime and if players do not receive a Snurtle Shell, they will receive a Broken Shell.

It is recommended that players fight Slurtles and Snurtles alone as players need to avoid hitting either while they are in their shell. Hitting either while in their retreat mode will cause them to remain in hiding until they are no longer being attacked. Why is this an issue? Well, for those of you who love having Merms, Pigs or other followers on your team, your follower friends may actually cause more problems than help.

If you’re truly having difficulty with Slurters or Snurtles, it may just be a good idea to hit them with a Torch or another weapon that deals fire damage as lighting a Slurtle or Snurtle on fire will cause it to explode in a matter of seconds, dealing 300 damage to surrounding Mobs.

If players ignite a Slurter or a Snurtle, players will not receive any of the items that normally drop from said Mobs. But does that really matter? Not really.

Though Snurtle Slime is useful for fueling Lanterns and Miner Hats or for causing 50 damage upon being ignited, players will never have to rely on these items. As for Broken Shells? Consider them useless as they can only be used to make Potted Ferns. *cough* lovely.

Slurtle Mounds have a 90% chance to spawn a Slurtle and a 10% chance to spawn a Snurtle when hit or after an Earthquake.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (12)

BABY TENTACLES & BIG TENTACLES

If you’re jumping down into Caves, chance are you’ve already come across Tentacles in the Overworld. Well, players will be exposed to two new variations of Tentacles in the deep down under.

Firstly, Big Tentacles or Tentapillars can be found in various locations in Caves, though to no one’s surprise, they act very differently in single-player in comparison to Don’t Starve Together.

In both versions of the game, Big Tentacles will spawn Baby Tentacles to protect them once damaged. Although Baby Tentacles only have20 Health and do20 damage, attacking a Big Tentacle will cause many to spawn. Players should be able to take out the Baby Tentacles in one shot with a Spear or stronger, making them easy to deal with.

Baby Tentacles drop no loot and can also be spawned by hammering Ancient Pseudoscience Stations.

Big Tentacles, which deal no damage to players, have500 Health in single-player and750 Health in DST.Upon killing a Big Tentacle players have the chance to receive the following loot:

Lightbulb 80%

Tentacle Spike 50%

Tentacle Spots 40%

Marsh Turf 25%

Slurtle Slime 10%

Skeleton 10%

Rocks 10%

Upon defeating a Big Tentacle in single-player, players will experience an Earthquake which causes the above loot to drop. It’s important to note that some of the rewards dropped by Tentacles can only be collected once per day, so take it slow when farming out these bad boys, especially since they do not respawn in single-player.

InDon’t Starve Together, players will not experience an Earthquake, however, the Tentapillar will still retreat into its hole, allowing players to jump in and teleport to another “Big Slimy Pit” where another Big Tentacle would have been found. Big Slimy Pits act similar to Wormholes, however, they will not cause players to lose Sanity.

Unlike single-playerDon’t Starve, Big Tentacles respawn inDon’t Starve Together, allowing players to farm them for Tentacle Spikes, Tentacle Spots or if players wish Mash Turf.

While Mash Turf isn’t the most useful reward, Wurt players may appreciate it.

SPITTER

Spitters are a pretty interesting type of Spider as they are the only Spiders that shoot out webs. Spitters spawn from Spilagmites, like their Cave Spider counterpart and deal the same damage as Cave Spiders; however, Spitters have a bit more health, sitting at 175 Health inDS and 350 Health inDST.

While a Spitter’s web can be dodged, a Spitter’s will shoot out webs rapidly, making it difficult for players to get close to said Spitters. Since a Spitter’s web can hinder the movements of a player, it is recommended that players use ranged weapons against Spitters instead of Melee Weapons.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (13)

TOADSTOOL(DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

While exploring the Caves inDon’t Starve Together players may come across a Toadstool Cap. While players may be tempted to chop down the Toadstool Cap, players must be aware that it summons one of the most difficult bosses inDST.

The Toadstool is an aggressive boss Mob that has 52,500 Health and deals between 100-250 damage per hit.

The Toadstool attaches a Spore Bomb to players within its range, which will provide a bit of light until 3.5 seconds later when it explodes. Players must avoid standing in the Spore Cloud as they will continue to take damage for up to a minute while standing in it.

Spore Bombs unfortunately also rot Food Weapons, making the Bat Bat and Ham Bat completely useless. Players are recommended to use Blow Darts, Dark Sword or Tentacle Spike when attacking the Toadstool.

During the fight, the Toadstool will begin placing Sporecaps which provide light but also help charge the Toadstool. In simple, the more Sporecaps, the more damage it will deal in a shorter amount of time and the more damage it can absorb.

Players are recommended to chop down trees to reduce the Toadstool’s level, making having more players on your team extremely useful.

Players can try to freeze the Toadstool while they are chopping down Sporecaps, however as mentioned, players may want to use Ice Flingomatics as they will passively freeze the Toadstool, allowing players to focus on the more important stuff.

Players will also be attacked by Boomshrooms which are the explosive variant of the Sporecaps.

The Toadstool can spawn a maximum of 3 extra Boomshrooms and can spawn in 5 in a row, making focussing on Sporecaps even more necessary.

When the Toadstool’s Health is below21,000 Health (40%) the Toadstool will cause a Slam Attack, which looks fairly similar to the Bearger’s Slam attack. It is recommended that players prepare themselves with a Walking Cane during this battle.

Although players may be tempted to use an Ice Staff to freeze the Toadstool, players will need a minimum of 4 attacks to freeze it, making using Ice Flingomatics much more effective. I would still recommend using Winona’s Catapults instead of using Ice Flingomatics or a mixture of both.

Upon defeating the Toadstool players will receive Frog Legs, Assorted Mushroom Caps, 3-5 Meat, 1 Shroom Skin and 2 Rare Blueprints.

The Blueprints players receive are for Funcaps and Mushroom Lights. You can read more about Funcaps and Mushroom Lights in my Mushroom guide.

If players are interested in a tougher version of the Toadstool battle they can spawn the Misery Toadstool by exploding a Volatile Canary near the Toadstool’s Cap.

The Misery Toadstool acts very similarly to the regular Toadstool though it has99,999 Health, deals increasingly more damage per Sporecap and absorbs much more damage. The Misery Toadstool is by far one of the toughest Mobs in the game.

The benefit of killing the Misery Toadstool is that players receive a Napsack Blueprint, require Shroom Skin and a Volatile Canary.

Players can throw Napsacks as they would a Water Balloon to cause a Sleep Cloud, essentially causing all nearby Mobs to sleep for 200 seconds.

THULECITE SINKHOLES (STALAGMITE TERRAIN)

Now, here’s another big difference between single-playerDon’t Starve andDon’t Starve Together. Players in single-player will gain access to the Ruins by hopping through a Sinkhole that is plugged by with Thulecite.

Similar to Sinkholes in the Overworld, players will unleash a hoard of Batilisks.

Thulecite Sinkholes can commonly be found in the Stalagmite Terrain.

Don’t Starve Together players will not have access to Thulecite Sinkholes and will find the Ruins simply by exploring the Caves.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (14)

WHAT ARE THE RUINS?

The Ruins are part of theDon’t Starve lore and according to theDon’t Starve Fandom “The Ruins are the last remnants of a forgotten civilization.”

In single-playerDon’t Starve players will have access to the Ruins in each Cave instance they have. Players will only have access to one instance of the Ruins.

The Ruins contain “final bosses” inDon’t StarveandDon’t Starve Together, though they are very similar to the rest of the Caves.

Players will experience earthquakes in the Ruins and will be in the perpetual night, so expect a lot of Sanity loss.

NEW STRUCTURES YOU’LL SEE IN THE RUINS

RELICS

While travelling around the Ruins players will come across a series of Relics, and broken Relics, which are in the shape of Tables, Chairs, Vases, Plates, Bowls and Dishes.

Chairs, Tables and Vases have the chance to drop loot and Plates, Bowls and Dishes do not. Resources Relics drop include:

Players inDon’t Starve Together will have the chance to craft Replicas of the Relics by placing certain items into the Ancient Chest.

The ancient Chest is located next to an Ancient Pseudoscience Station and can be identified by its 6 slots.

The following are the items required to gain each replica and their crafting recipe:

ANCIENT STATUES

Appearing as gold statues, Ancient Statues are structures that populate the Ruins and should never be left behind.

Ancient Statues are guaranteed to drop 1 Thulecite plus have a 5% chance to drop 1 extra Thulecite. Players will also have a chance to receive a Blue, Red, Purple, Yellow, Orange or Green Gem.

Players will be able to tell what Gem they are going to receive as the Gem will be placed in the statue’s Staff. If the Ancient Statue does not have a Gem placed in its staff, players will receive a piece of Nightmare Fuel.

Ancient Statues had different phases depending on the phase of the Nightmare Cycle, though the most important thing to note is that Ancient Statues emit light during all phases except for the Calm Phase.

If players mine an Ancient Statue during the Nightmare Phase, players have a 30% chance to spawn in a Crawling Horror or a Terrorbeak.

Don’t Starve Together players will see a second set of Ancient Statues in the Atrium Biome. The Ancient Statues look slimy and will be indestructible.

There’s no reason to interact with the Ancient Statues, however, they will be transformed when the Ancient Gateway is activated and will represent Ancient Statues in the Ruins being respawned.

NIGHTMARE LIGHTS

Nightmare Lights are large light sources identified by their pink bases.

Nightmare Lights emit varying levels of light depending on what state of the Nightmare Cycle players are currently experiencing in the Ruins. The Nightmare Lights will open completely at the peak phase of the Nightmare Cycle.

While Nightmare Lights are open they will drain a player’s Sanity. At most the player will lose 900 Sanity per minute, so players should be ready to manage their Sanity at all points. Get ready to fight lots of Shadow Creatures!

I’ll cover a bit more about the Nightmare Lights during the Nightmare Cycle section, but it’s important to note here that Nightmare Lights spawn Shadow Creatures, whether or not you’re insane.

Don’t Starve Together players will not experience Nightmare Lights, but instead will seeAncient Obelelisks. Ancient Obelisks activate during specific phases of the Nightmare Cycle but are only activated once players insert the Ancient Key into the Gateway.

Although the Ancient Obelisks appear different, other than the need to activate them with the Ancient Key, Ancient Obelisks act very similar to Nightmare Lights.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (16)

ANCIENT PSEUDOSCIENCE STATION

The most important structure players are going to want to familiarize themselves with is the Ancient Pseudoscience Station.

The Ancient Pseudoscience Station comes in two variants, the Broken Ancient Pseudoscience Station and the repaired version. Each version of the Ancient Pseudoscience Station provides players with access to different items, though players may also wish to destroy Ancient Pseudoscience Stations for their rare resources.

Players can expect to receive the following from destroying an Ancient Pseudoscience Station:

2 Thulecite

Nightmare Fuel50%

Frazzled Wires 50%

Rocks 50%

When Ancient Pseudoscience Stations are struck with Hammers players will be struck by lightning, meaning that WX-78 players will go into System Overload. Players will also want some Healing items on them or at least some armour as players will endure up to 11 lightning strikes if they hope to destroy the Ancient Pseudoscience Station.

If players wish to repair a Broken Ancient Pseudoscience Station they will need to fork over between one to six Thulecite Fragments.

If players destroy the Ancient Fuelweaver they will get a respawned batch inDon’t Starve Together.

While players will be able to craft any recipes from a fully repaired Ancient Pseudoscience Station, players will only be able to craft 7 out of the 14 recipes from the Broken Ancient Pseudoscience Station.

The majority of the recipes players will have access to I’ve already covered in this article.

SPLUMONKEY PODS

While Splumonkey Pods are not innately signs of destruction, players are going to want to avoid hanging by the Splumonkey Pods during the peaks of the Nightmare Cycle.

Splumonkey Pods are most commonly found in the Village Biome and appear as a Monkey Head, acting similar to Slurtle Mounds, summoning a maximum of 4 Splumpnkeys at a time.

Players can destroy Splumonkey Pods for 2 Manure, 2 Cave Bananas and a chance for a male or female Gnome.

EEL PONDS

Other than their inability to spawn Frogs, there’s nothing very interesting about the Ponds found in the Ruins.

Ponds appear as blue, instead of green or purple, and will spawn Eels instead of Fish, meaning that players will have access to Unagi (1 Eel, 1 Lichen and 2 Fillers) but otherwise, there’s nothing special you can do with Eels, which is a disappointment in my opinion.

I think the biggest distaste I have for Eel Ponds is that they don’t provide a new Crock Pot recipe, even for Warly.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (17)

ORNATE CHEST

The final Structure players will become aware of in the Labyrinth section of the Ruins is the Ornate Chest.

Ornate Chests are often intertwined among Dangling Depth Dweller webs and have the ability to trigger random effects including:

Spawning Dangling Depth Dwellers

Spawning Terror Beaks

Raising Hunger, Sanity or Health

Lowering Hunger, Sanity or Health

Raising the durability of inventory items

Lowering durability of inventory items

Ornate Chests also have the possibility to drop one of the following items:

NIGHTMARE CYCLE

The Nightmare Cycle can somewhat be compared as day cycle of the Ruins, though I have to say that the Nightmare Cycle is much deadlier than being met with Charlie in the Darkness.

The Nightmare Cycle has 4 phases in it, being the Calm Phase, Warning Phase, Nightmare Phase and Dawn Phase.

Players will be able to tell what part of the Nightmare Cycle the Ruins are in from the Caves through Nightmare Fissures.

1. CALM PHASE (285-345 SECONDS)

During the Calm Phase, all Nightmare Lights will be closed, meaning that players will not be bothered by Shadow Creatures.

The Calm Phase is considered the safe phase and players will not hear any ambient sounds.

The Calm Phase is further identified by the blue Runic Turf.

2. WARNING PHASE (60-90 SECONDS)

During the Warning Phase, players will begin noticing Nightmare Lights opening. Although the Nightmare Lights are semi-open, they won’t spawn Shadow Creatures.

During the Warning Phase, the Runic Turf will turn gray and ambient sounds will begin to play.

Players will also notice the Ancient Statues glowing during the Warning Phase.

3. NIGHTMARE PHASE (150-210 SECONDS)

The Nightmare Phase is the most dangerous phase of the Nightmare Cycle.

Players will notice the Runic Turf cracking and glowing red while loud ambient noises are heard in the background.

During the Nightmare Phase, Nightmare Lights will be completely open and will spawn Nightmare Creatures regularly.

Players will also begin to see Splumonkeys turn into hostile versions called Shadow Splumonkeys.

During the Nightmare Phase, players will begin to experience regular earthquakes, making having extra armour a necessity as players will be getting attacked from all sides.

Ancient Statues will begin to seep Nightmare Fuel from their eyes during the Nightmare Phase, so if players have a chance to mine any of the Statues during this phase they may be met by an extra Shadow Creature.

Note: This is the phase in which the Ancient Key locks the Atrium to while playing Don’t Starve Together.

4. DAWN PHASE (15-45 SECONDS)

Although calmer than the Nightmare Phase, the Dawn Phase is still fairly dangerous as Nightmare Lights remain open and continue to spawn Shadow Creatures.

Players will continue to get attacked by Shadow Splumonkeys and the Ancient Statues will continue to glow.

During the Dawn Phase, players will still notice the gray Runif Turf, though ambient sounds will begin getting quieter.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (18)

SURVIVING THE NIGHTMARE CYCLE

It can be hard to survive the Nightmare Cycle, especially if you’re a player who isn’t comfortable fighting hoards of Shadow Creatures. Well, for you faint of heart, grab Snurtle Shell Armour or a Bush Hat (1 Straw Hat, 1 Rope and 1 Bush) and get to hiding as soon as the Nightmare Phase starts spawning the Shadow Creatures.

Players can effectively stay hidden for the whole duration of the Nightmare and Dawn Phase, ultimately keeping them safe at all times. Just make sure not to AFK, because you’re going to starve!

It is also recommended that you destroy the majority of the Splumonkey Pods before you enter the Nightmare Phase. Getting rid of the Splumonkeys will ensure that you do not get damaged as much and will make the Ruins much safer to farm for Nightmare Fuel.

Players will not have to get rid of all of the Splumpnkey Pods to safely maneuver and players are not recommended to anyways as Splumonkey Pods are non-renewable. I recommend setting up a larger safe area for just farming Shadow Creatures and leaving the rest of the pods alone.

BIOMES IN THE RUINS

There are a total of 5 biomes (if you don’t count “the Abyss”) that can be found in the Runs, though in Don’t Starve Together, players will have access to a 6th biome that is exclusive toDST.

Each instance of the Ruins will come with various layouts and depending on how lucky you are, you may find the Ruins within seconds of entering the Cave Systems. But before you get excited and hop down to the deep under, let’s get a proper understanding of the biomes.

LABYRINTH

The Labyrinth appears to be exactly as its name suggests, a labyrinth or a maze.

Players will be required to explore through the Labyrinth in hopes of discovering the end, which is signified by a room filled with Lichen, Light Flowers and Thulecite Walls.

The biggest challenge when travelling around the Labyrinth is the gaps within the flooring. Players can avoid having to slowly grind their ways through the Labyrinth by hopping over the gaps with a Lazy Explorer, or if they are playing as Wortox, they can Soul Hop using Souls.

Wortox is my personal favourite character to take into the Ruins, though, it’s undeniable that WX-78 was meant for the Ruins given the number of Gears you can score, though not in the Labyrinth.

The Labyrinth is the only place players will be able to find theAncient Guardian.

MILITARY

With a combination of Cave Rock Turf and Runic Turfs, the Military biome is easily identifiable by the Ancient Statue located in the center and the various Broken Clockworks laying around the entire biome.

Players will also have access to Nightmare Lights, Flintless Boulders, Ancient Pseudoscience Stations, Thulecite Walls and of course, the Dangling Depth Dwellers.

As the name suggests, the Military Biome is a fairly hostile location that players can explore and collect resources. The Military biome is also one of the best places players can collect Gears, especially if they decide to hammer the Broken Clockworks. Players can also use said Broken Clockworks to assemble an army if they are having difficulty clearing the Labyrinth or other areas in the Caves.

SACRED

Always connected to the far end of the Labyrinth, the Sacred biome can be identified by its purple Runic Turf.

The reality is that the Sacred Biome is very similar to the Military Biome, however, the Sacred Biome has many more Broken Clockworks and a good amount of Ancient Statues and Nightmare Lights.

The Sacred Biome is the only biome in the Caves that can feature a fully repaired Ancient Pseudoscience Station, so if players are not in the mood to collect the resources required, head on over!

Don’t Starve Together players who are trying to complete the Metheus Puzzle will be able to find the Ancient Chest here. Players will also be able to craft Replica Relics using the Ancient Chest.

The Sacred Biome tends to be safer for players than the Military Biome, simply due to its lack of Dangling Depth Dwellers.

VILLAGE

Known as the residential district of the Ruins, the Village biome contains a variety of Money Totems, the home of Splumonkeys, Cave Banana Trees as well as Light Flowers, Lichen, Ponds, Relics and Thulecite Walls.

The most notable Structures in the Village are the Relics as they have the chance to drop some rare resources.

WILDS

The first thing you need to know about the Wilds is that you will never want to base in them. Although you don’t want to base in the Wilds, players will want to make sure that you can get to the Wilds quickly as they are filled with lots of goodies that players will not want to pass up.

The Wilds are the homes of Mobs such as Slurpers and Depths Worms. The Wilds also contains plenty of Light Flowers, Nightmare Fissures, Blue Mushrooms, and of Course Cave Lichen.

Players may come across a few Monkey Totems in the Wilds, though don’t count on it.

Don’t Starve Together players will want to swing by the Wilds regularly as they are the source of Lesser Glow Berries, which act very similar to regular Glow Berries. While Lesser Glow Berries are not as effective as regular Glow Berries, they are a great way to refuel your light sources, especially your Miner Hat or Lantern.

If you’re any character, again except Wigfrid, get to munching on these guys instead as they will keep you lit for a minute at a time.

Note: It is recommended that you stay near the Wilds duringthe Warning Phase of the Nightmare Cycle.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (19)

ATRIUM (DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

Don’t Starve Togetherplayers can be happy to know that they are also given another exclusive area called the Atrium.

The Atrium is very similar to the Labyrinth though it can only be accessed by jumping in a Tentacle Pillar Hole, which becomes available after killing a Big Tentacle.

Upon arriving into the Atrium players will be met by a group of Obelisks. Players may recognize the Obelisks from around the Pig King as the Obelisks at the end of the maze will remain down (or open) while players are above 15% Sanity, If a player’s Sanity drops below 15%, the player may become entrapped in the Atrium or unable to access the Atrium.

Players must make their way through a zig-zag maze that leads to the Ancient Gateway, which is where they can battle the Ancient Fuelweaver.

Players will expect to see Ancient Fences, which block Mobs from entering but allow the player to proceed; Ancient Obelisks, Obelisks, Ancient Beacons, Ancient Statues, Ornate Chests and Dangling Depths Dwellers.

The Atrium follows the Nightmare Cycle, like the rest of the Ruins and once players insert the Ancient Key into the Gateway, the Nightmare Cycle will remain in its peak state.

Players will be able to construct an Odd Skeleton (8 Fossils) next to the activated Ancient Gateway to fight the Ancient Fuelweaver, though if players are not ready they will be able to pull out the Ancient Key.

More on the Ancient Fuelweaver later though.

RESOURCES IN THE RUINS

The unfortunate part of scavenging in the Ruins that there are not very many resources. layers will still be able to plant resources like Saplings, Berry Bushes, Trees and Flowers; however, they will only find Light Flowers, Cave Banana Trees and Ferns.

Since we’ve already talked about the rest, here’s the only resource that’s new in the Ruins:

CAVE BANANA TREES

Found in both Caves and Ruins, Cave Banana Trees are most commonly found in Village biomes located in the Sunken Forest.

Cave Banana Trees provide players with Bananas which will give players12.5 Hunger and1 Healthwhen eaten raw or12.5 Hunger and3 Health.

While players may want to eat Bananas for the small amount of Health provided by their cooked variant, there is not much use for farming Cave Banana Trees, unless you just want to use them as filler.

Otherwise, Cave Bananas will mostly attract Splumonkeys *shrug* nbd!

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (20)

NEW MOBS IN THE RUINS

Players will be met with Depths Worms and Shadow Creatures as they do in the other areas of the Caves, however, they will also be met by the following Mobs:

SLURPER

I can’t help but love the name of the Slurpers and the reality is that these cuties are especially useful for characters like Wolfgang, Wes and as always, my darling Wigfrid, but more on that later!

Slurpers aren’t the hardiest of Mobs, coming in with200 Health and30 Damage. Slurpers do have a very long range though, making them annoying to deal with.

Upon aggroing a player, a Slurper will attach itself to the player by taking place of the player’s head armour rapidly draining the player’s Hunger by1.7 Hunger per second. If players already had an item in their head slot the item will fall to the ground.

The only benefit to having a Slurper on your head is that it provides players with the same amount of light as a Miner Hat.

To remove a Slurper, players must unequip it from their head slot as they would any other piece of headgear.

Slurpers are vicious and will jump onto Bunnymen and Pigs, making allied Bunnymen and Pigs helpful when exploring the Mushtree Forest.

If you do choose to travel with an allied Bunnyman or Pig make sure you’re watching over their Health as Bunnymen and Pigs lose 5 Health every 2 seconds since they do not have “Hunger.”

Upon killing a Slurper, players will receive 2 Light Bulbs and aSlurper Pelt.

Slurper Pelts can be traded to the Pig King for 1 Gold Nugget, though I would recommend using 6 Slurper Pelts, 2 Ropes and 2 Nightmare Fuel to make a Belt of Hunger. Belts of Hunger are one of the best ways of dealing with Hunger issues.

DAMAGED CHESS PIECES

I’ve already covered the majority of what you need to know about Damaged Chess Pieces in my Gears guide, but in short, players will be able to both defeat Damage Chess Pieces or will be able to ally them with 3 Gears.

Strategies will depend on what players need in Caves, though I recommend using Rock Lobsters over Damage Chess pieces any day. It doesn’t mean that players won’t want to use Damaged Chess Pieces or they are not useful, especially if you have lots of Gears on hand.

SPLUMONKEY

Originating as a completely neutral Mob, Splumonkeys transform into hostile Shadow Monkeys during the Nightmare Phase of the Nightmare Cycle.

Shadow Splumonkeys have the same stats are regular Splumonkeys, being125 Healthand20 Damage, though Shadow Splumonkeys will attack any allies, including Merms, Pigs, Spiders or even Rock Lobsters.

Be ready for a massive attack while these little guys are around, though they should be easy to deal with if you don’t have a lot of Shadow Creatures lurking beside you.

Upon killing a Splumonkey, players will receive 1 Morsel, 1 Cave Banana and a 50% chance to receive Nightmare Fuel. If killed as a Shadow Splumonkey, players will also receive a Beard Hair while killing a Splumonkey.

I recommend keeping all resources away from Splumonkeys as they can harvest Berry Bushes, Mushrooms and they can also steal from Chests, Ice Boxes, Chester or even Crock Pot. Splumonkeys are more annoying than hard to deal with.

Caves & Ruins | Don't Starve & DST Mega Guide - Basically Average (21)

ANCIENT GUARDIAN

Upon completing the Labyrinth, players will be faced by an Ancient Guardian who looks and acts very similar to a Clockwork Rook.

The Ancient Guardian comes in hot with2500 Health in single-playerDon’t Starve, but a whopping10,000Health inDon’t Starve Together dealing a total of100 damage per hit.

Players should expect a decently challenging battle against the Ancient Guardian, whether or not they are in single-player as the Ancient Guardian escapes quickly and proficiently. If players aren’t ready to solo the Ancient Guardian it is recommended that they bring a team a Rock Lobsters or use Gunpowder, Blow Darts or even an Ice Staff to help burst down the Ancient Guardian.

Note:Players insingle-playerDon’t Starve will be able to trap the Ancient Guardian between two campfires, though players inDon’t Starve Together cannot exploit this as the Ancient Guardian destroys Campfires in DST.

Players are recommended to have at least 3 Football Helmets and 5 Log Suits when battling the Ancient Guardian, however, players may require more or less equipment depending on how experienced they are.

I usually use Bundling Wrap to carry around extra equipment.

Upon defeating the Ancient Guardian players will receive 8 Meat, the Guardian’s Horn and a large Ornate Chest.

The Guardian’s Horn is by far the most interesting loot players can get in all ofDon’t Starve andDon’t Starve Together as it will allow players to build the Houndius Shootius (1 Deerclops Eyeball, 1 Guardian’s Horn and 5 Thulecite) which will always require an Ancient Pseudoscience Station to craft as it cannot be prototyped.

The Houndius Shootius has 1,000 Health and deals 65 damage per hit, making it the best way to farm Hounds, Pigs, Spiders or even Seasonal Giants. The Houndius Shootius has a 3 second attack period.

If the Houndius Shootius is damaged it will regenerate 12 health per second and players can also repair it by using Healing Salves, Honey Poultice, or any other non-edible Healing Items.

Players should be wary when standing too close to the Houndius Shootius as it will drain 6.25 Sanity per minute, though players can easily combat Sanity drain with some Sanity boosting items.

Players in single-playerDon’t Starve will only be able to get 3 Houndius Shootius unless they go through a Teleportato.Don’t Starve Together players will be able to farm the Ancient Guardian as beating the Ancient Fuelweaver resets the Ruins, thus resetting the Ancient Guardian. Enjoy having no life!

Truthfully, players will not need to grind out too many Houndius Shootius, especially if they are using a Deconstruction Staff to break down the Houndius Shootius when moving it. I personally like having 3 Houndius Shootiusesm, though similar to having infinite Lamp Posts in Hamlet, players may just like having some easier ways of playing the game.

Oh, before I forget! Remember that Large Ornate Chest I mentioned? Well, it has a chance to drop 3-6 random items. Don’t Starve Together players will always have an Ancient Key in their Large Ornate Chest, which can be used in the Atrium Biome to summon the Ancient Fuelweaver.

The Large Ornate Chest has a chance to contain:

ItemsQuantity
Thulecite Club, The Lazy Explorer, or Star Caller’s Staff1
Thulecite Suit or Thulecite Club1
Fire Staff, Ice Staff, Telelocator Staff, or Pick/Axe1
Green, Yellow or Orange Gem1-3
Red, Blue or Purple Gem3-5
Gears3-6
Nightmare Fuel5-8
Thulecite5-12
Thulecite Fragments12-36

ForDon’t Starve Together players who want to defeat the Ancient Guardian and not the Ancient Fuelweaver, it’s important to note that you cannot bring the Ancient Key up to the overworld. Trying to take it up a flight of stairs will leave it in the Caves and players are unsure where they placed the Ancient Key they can use a Thulecite Medallion to locate it.

ANCIENT FUELWEAVER (DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

The Ancient Fuelweaver, in my opinion, is considered the Final Boss of the Caves inDon’t Starve Together. Basically, the overworld has a neverending onslaught of seasonal bosses, while the underworld has unlimited resources and a couple of tough bosses that can be summoned after longer periods of time.

We’ve talked a little bit about the Ancient Fuelweaver when it comes to farming Nightmare Fuel, but I’ve never taken the time to properly explain what the battle between you and the Ancient Fuelweaver will look like.

Players are required to collect theShadow Atrium, which is only obtained by killing the Shadow Pieces (Shadow Knight, Shadow Bishop and Shadow Rook).

Players will also need 8 Fossils to build the odd Skeleton, which can be combined with the Shadow Atrium while the Ancient Key is in the Ancient Gateway. A lot to remember, I know.

The Ancient Fuelweaver has16,000 Health and deals100 damageper hit.

Upon being summoned the Ancient Fuelweaver will attack players, confining them in a small bone cage when players get too far away. The Ancient Fuelweaver will also spawn Fossil Spikes to attack players, though if players stand apart from each other they should be fine.

Once the Ancient Fuelweaver is brought down to 10,000 Health it will also summon a bunch of Woven Shadows that only have 1 Health.

Players should try killing as many Woven Shadows as they can as each Woven Shadow heals the Ancient Fuelwever for 400 Health.

Tactics that work best against the Woven Shadows include Wendy’s sister Abigail, Willow’s Bernie, a bunch of allies, the Weather Pain or on the odd chance, an earthquake.

During this stage, the Ancient Fuelweaver will also summon 6 Unseen Hands around the Ancient Gateway. Players must destroy the Unseen Hands or else the Ancient Fuelweaver will remain invulnerable.

While Unseen Hands also have 1 Health, players will not be able to attack them unless they are Insane, making Green Mushrooms a great resource.

The final trick to the Ancient Fuelweaver is that it can Mind Control insane players for 3.5 seconds. Players may be tempted to wear Sanity items to counter this, but I would recommend killing Shadow Creatures as fast as you can instead.

Shadow Creatures will restore 15-33 Sanity upon being killed, making them one of the quickest ways do keep your Sanity up while against the Ancient Fuelweaver.

If players have summoned the Ancient Fuelweaver, but do not feel like they were actually ready they can Telepoof or Teleport as Wortox out of the Atrium. At that time the Ancient Key will fall out of the Ancient Gateway and the Fossils and Shadow Atrium will drop to the ground.

If players defeat the Ancient Fuelweaver they will receive 8 Fossils, 2-4 Nightmare Fuel, the Shadow Thurible, the Bone Helm, the Bone Armour and a Rose.

All the drops from the Ancient Fuelweaver will make battling the Ancient Fuelweaver easier in the future as the Shadow Thurible will prevent players from being snared by the Ancient Fuelwaver’s (and Cave Skeleton’s) bone cage attack and the Bone Armour and Bone Helm are two of the best pieces of armour players can have in Don’t Starve Together.

After the Ancient Fuelweaver is defeated players will witness the Ancient Gateway destabilize, ultimately consuming the Ancient Key and killing all Shadow Creatures.

After about 4 minutes, players will have a fresh Ruins instance, meaning a new Ancient Gateway, more Damaged and Broken Clockworks, Splumonkey Pods, Slurpers, Depths Worms, Ancient Statures and of course our favourite Ancient Pseudoscience Stations. What does that mean? Destroy everything right before you fight the Ancient Fuelweaver because you’re going to get plenty more where that came from!

The only catch is that it takes 20 days before the Ancient Gateway can take an Ancient Key, so players may want to time their Ancient Fuelweaver fights with their seasons.

UNRELEASED / BETA CONTENT FORDON’T STARVE TOGETHER

LUNAR GROTTO (DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

Located in the Caves biome, the Lunar Grotto spawns next to a Blue Mushtree Forest and will be identifiable by the Mutated Fungal Turf it is covered in.

If players are in a world that has the Lunar Grotto retrofit, they will have to access the Lunar Grotto by taking a Worm Hole that is found in the Blue Mushtree Forest. As it is not pa player’s fault that the Lunar Grotto has been retrofitted, players will not lose Sanity when they take this specific Worm Hole.

Similar to the Lunar Island, a player will have their Sanity replaced with Enlightenment.

Players will be able to find Vitreoases, Small Vitreoasis, Light Flowers and Lunar Mushtrees in the Lunar Grotto.

Mobs in this area include Bulbous Lightbugs, Mush Gnomes and Carrats.

It should be noted that once players activate the Archive Switch, which we will cover below, the Lunar Grotto will be filled with Greater Gestalls and Shadow Creatures that spawn from the Nightmare Ramparts, which look like black crystals and will drain a player’s Sanity by 800 per minute.

Greater Gestalts will not affect players and will instead fight Shadow Creatures unless a player is wearing Night Armour or has the Dark Sword equipped. If a player is using either of these items the player will receive 179 damage.

It should be noted that Greater Gestalts also attack Reanimated Skeletons, The Ancient Fuelweaver, Woven Shadows, Maxwell’s Shadow Puppets as well as Shadow Splunkeys.

Players will still be affected by Earthquakes in the Lunar Grotto, though it will drop Rocks, Flint, moon Glass, Naked Mole Bats, Carrats and Stone Fruit.

VITREOASIS & SMALL VITREOASIS

One of the coolest additions to the Lunar Grotto biome is the Small Vitreoasis and regular Vitreoasis.

Both of them are commonly found and will provide players with Moon Glass.

Each regular Vitreoasis has 3 pieces of Moon Glass which can each be mine for 2 Moon Shards with a 50% chance to obtain a third.

Vitreoasises have a 10% chance to respawn their Moon Glass every Full Moon.

Small Vitreoasises only have 1 Moon Stone, providing players with the same yield of 2 Moon Shards with a 50% chance to obtain a third.

LUNAR MUSHTREE

Unlike the Mushtrees on the surface, Lunar Mush Trees are specific to the Lunar Grotto and will drop 2 Logs and 1 Moon Shroom.

Players will remain lit by the Lunar Mushtree as they chop them down and players may spawn in a single Lunar Spore for every swing they take at the Lunar Mushtree.

Lunar Spores are deadly, dealing 10 damage to everything in a 3 unit radius, so after players take a swing, they should really back up!

As for Moon Shrooms, they will put players to sleep for 3 seconds, applying 13.3 seconds of Grogginess.

Players can eat the Moon Shroom cooked or raw, obtaining the following stats:

RAW MOON SHROOM

Health:0

Hunger:12.5

Sanity: 10

COOKED MOON SHROOM

Health:0

Hunger: –12.5

Sanity: -10

Though players can eat Moon Shrooms by themselves, they may want to wait until they also have 1 Red Cap, 1 Green Cap and 1 Blue Cap as cooking all 4 types of shrooms together will provide the player with:

Health:0

Hunger:25

Sanity: 10

BULBOUS LIGHTBUG

The Bublous Lightbug is a mob that is specific to the Lunar Grotto, though players may be surprised to note that Bulbous Lightbugs spawn occassionally when players pick Light Flowers.

Bulbous Lightbugs are passive mobs that emits light in a small radius.

Players are able to catch a Bulbous Lightbug in a Bug Net in order to capture a Bulbous Lightbug Item that attracts up to 3 other Bulbous Lightbugs, enticing them to follow a player.

Bulbous Lightbug Items have to be fed every 2 days or they will die. Players can use Vegetables to feed the Bulbous Lightbug, though if dropped the Bulbous Lightbug will start flying around again.

If players attack a Bulbous Lightbug it will stop following the player, though players should betware that bulbous Lightbugs only have 25 Health.

It takes a Light Flower 12 days to spawn another Bulbous Lightbug.

MUSH GNOME

Another exclusive mob in the Lunar Grotto is the Mush Gnome, being another passive mob.

Mush Gnomes will occassionally spawn Lunar Spores, which can hurt a player and if they are attacked they will drop multiple Lunar Spores.

While Mush Gnomes drop Lunar Spores, they are immune to the damage they cause.

If a Mush Gnome is killed by a player, having a high 600 Health, they will drop 1 Living Log with a 50% chance to drop a second one, 3-5 Lunar Spores and 2 Moon Shrooms.

It takes Mush Gnomes 1 day to respawn.

ANCIENT ARCHIVE(DON’T STARVE TOGETHER)

A newer biome to theDon’t Starve Together world is the Ancient Archive.

The Ancient Archive is found beyond the Lunar Grotto, though it is separated from the Lunar Grotto by Cave-Ins and Boulders.

Players will be able to tell that they are in the Ancient Archive as it is covered with Archive Chandeliers, Archive Pillars and the ground is covered with Ancient Stonework.

Upon entering. players may notice that the Archive Chandeliers, which are hanging from the ceiling, are unlit, though players can complete the Archive Switch set piece in order to permanently light this area.

Players will also find Ancient Kilns, Tidy Hidey-Holes, Ancient Guard Posts, Fountains of Knowledge, Archival Stone Walls, Archival Thulecite Walls, Ancient Moon Statues, Ancient Moon Statues as well as Relics in this area.

There are also Mobs that are exclusive to this area being Dust Moths and Sentrypeded Husks.

While in the Ancient Archive, players will be unaffected by Earthquakes, avoiding all damage, but also not gaining any of the resources that fall from the ceiling. Blessing and a curse.

THE ARCHIVE SWITCH

The Archive Switch can be identified fairly easily as it is a golden button that has three Ornate Pedestals connected to it.

Two of the attached Ornate Pedestals have Iridescenct Gems, though the last one is empty.

As you can guess, players will have to obtain a third Iridescent Gem, obtained by using a Deconstruction Staff on the Moon Caller’s Staff and placing the Iridescenct Gem in the Ornate Pedestal will activate all the Archive Chanteliers, Archive Orchestrina, Ancient Guard Posts as well as the Fountains of Knowledge.

The Activated Archive Switch will begin sending Security Pulses, which look like blue and white orbs, and will begin bringing life into the Sentrypeded Husks, making them into Ancient Sentrypedes.

ANCIENT KILNS

Ancient Kilns are a great structure to have around as they act similarly to a Crock Pot, though unlike Crock Pots they naturally spawn with 1 Collected Dust in them.

Normally players would have to combine 2 Rocks, 1 Salt Crystals and 1 Nitre to make them, though players will be more excited to learn that Collected Dust is a resource that can be combined to make Amberosia.

Amberosia requires 1 Collected Dust and 3 fillers and can be fed to Dust Moths, which will cause the Dust Moths to decorate their Tidy Hidey-Holes with Thulecite, allowing players to mine 3 Thulecite Fragments, making the need to reset the Ruins… well… dumb!

ANCIENT MOON STATUES

Appearing very similar to other statues in the runes, the Ancient Moon Statue features two Thulecite creatures holding up a round Moon Stone.

When mined the Ancient Moon Statue will drop 1 Thulecite and 1 Moon Rock.

Players will also have a 50% chance to obtain a second piece of Moon Rock.

TIDY HIDEY-HOLE & DUST MOTHS

Acting similar to a Spider Den or another spawn point for Mobs, the Tidy Hidey-Hole is the home of Dust Moths.

Tidy Hidey-Holes can spawn a single Dust Moth at a time and if killed the Dust Moth will respawn after 10 days.

There is no real reason to kill a Dust Moth as the only thing they drop is 1 Morsel. Otherwise, you can leave them to clean the Ancient Moon Statues and Ancient Lunarune Stones.

As mentioned, if players feed a Dust Moth Amberosia, the Dust Moth will spend 6 minutes decorating their Tidy Hidey-Hole and upon completion the player can mine it for 3 Thulecite Fragments.

Players have a chance to obtain more Thulecite with each swing, though their chances reduce for eery swing, intially being 75% then 50% then 25% then another 25% with a final 1% chance to obtain a full piece of Thulecite.

ANCIENT SENTRYPEDE & SENTRYPEDE HUSKS

Until activated with Security Pulses, all Sentrypedes will appear as Sentrypede Husks.

Players can attack Sentrypede Husks in order to ensure that none of them turn into Ancient Sentrypedes.

There are three stages of Sentrypede Husks and while players can damage them, there is no way to completely destroy a Sentrypede Husk, but can bring it down to a minimum of 45 Health.

Sentrypede Husks will regenerate 1 Health per second.

198-300 HEALTH

Sentypede Husks appear whole and can be activated by the Security Pulse.

99-197 HEALTH

Sentrypedes appear to be somewhat broken, though stll hold their rounded shape.

This form of Sentrypede Husk cannot be activated by the Security Pulse.

45-98 HEALTH

Sentrypedes appear completely broken and cannot be activated by the Security Pulse.

ANCIENT SENTRYPEDE
HEALTH

1,200

DAMAGE

The Ancient Sentrypede can deal 40 damage to a single target, though it also has an AoE attack that deals 20 damage.

Ancient Sentrypedes also have the ability to roll, dealing 40 damage to targets as far as 20 units and damaging all structures in its path.

ATTACK PERIOD

5 seconds

ATTACK RANGE

2

WALKING SPEED

4

Upon being destroyed the Ancient Sentrypede will return to being a Sentrypede Husk.

ARCHIVE ORCHESTRINA

Bringing puzzles into the game, the Archive Orchestrina is a large circle that is surrounded by 8 other circles and will activate once players place an Iridescent Gem into The Archive Switch.

Players must place Distilled Knowledge into the Archive Orchestrina in order to completely activate it.

Upon activation, the Archive Orchestrina will begin lighting up. Players must then begin walking onto the 8 outer circles in the correct order, though the order is randomized, causing this part of the game to be very foccused on trial and error.

If players are successful in solving the Archive Orchestrina puzzle, the Distilled Knowledge will be consumed and the player will have access to a new recipe associated to that set puzzle.

Players will need to rinse and repeat if they hope to learn all the recipes.

FOUNTAIN OF KNOWLEDGE

The Fountains of Knowledge, to me, look very similar to a Bishop Clockwork, though there are varients that look like other Chess Pieces.

Players will be able to identify them by their Yellow, Blue and Pink liquid and will find them deactivated until the Archive Switch is activated.

When interacted with the Fountains of Knowledge will provide players with Distilled Knowledge that is associated with the colour of the Fountain of Knowledge.

YELLOW

The Yellow Fountain of Knowledge provides players with access to the Terra Firma Tamper Blueprint.

The Terra Firma Tamper can be crafted using 3 Cut Stone, 1 Thulecite and 1 Wet Goop and provides players access to the Landscaping Tab, which allows players to craft the following Turfs:

Forest Turf

Grass Turf

Svanna Turf

Deciduous Turf

Sandy Turf

Rocky Turf

Guano Turf

Cave Rock Turf

Slimy Turf

Mud Turf

Fungal Turf

Fungal Turf (Red)

Fungal Turf (Green)

It should be noted that players will have to always stand next to the Terra Firma Tamper if they want access to the Landscaping tab.

BLUE

The Blue Fountain of Knowledge provides players with access to the Astral Detector Blueprint.

The Astral Detector can be crafter using 2 Thulecite Fragments and 1 Moon Rock and when placed on the ground will be able to point players into the direction of the nearest Celestial Sanctum Piece.

Although it would be nice for the Astral Detector to have infinite uses, it only has 10… boo!

If the Celestial Sanctum Piece is about 1 tile away it will begin drilling into the ground.

Players are required to find two pieces of the Celestial Sanctum in order to assemble a complete one. As many other Celestial objects, the Celestial Sanctum will will allow players to obtain the Celestial Tab.

If a Celestial Altar, Celestial Tribute and Celestial Sanctum are built within 5 tiles of each other it will spawn in Mysterious Energy, which seems to have no use currently.

RED/PINK

The Red/Pink Fountain of Knowledge provides players with access to the Collected Dust blueprint, which we’ve covered the use for.

Get to farming up those Dust Moths! Enjoy the Thulecite!

SEALED PORTAL

Although the Sealed Portal can be found in the Ancient Archive, it is currently unknown what it does.

The Sealed Portal is the only thing that is not activated when the Archive Switch is turned on.
