I had the pleasure of attending The CI Summet 2024, yesterday evening. Hosted by the Carnegie Initiative, the panel I attended was titled "Building Effective Networks and Navigating Relationships" where the panellists discussed the importance of effective networking specifically in the sports and entertainment industry. As someone who is very passionate about sport, this panel was an eye-opening discussion in networking with purpose and with genuine intentions. The following are some of the discussion points that I found especially interesting:1. WIIFM (What's in it for me?)Some people see networking as a way to set themselves up for success. Though there is nothing wrong with looking out for yourself, if connections are made for selfish reasons, they are not fully formed relationships with optimal benefits, for both parties involved. When creating new connections ask what you can do to benefit your connection to create symbiotic relationship. Be genuinely curious and caring about your professional connections to create the most solid network.2. Soft on people hard on issuesPositions of leadership can be high stress, especially in sports and entertainment, where current events drive action. When things go wrong it is easy to try to place blame and dwell on who and what went wrong. Reminding ones self to be hard on the issue at hand while being soft on people, choosing to lead with empathy and a vision to help everyone reach their full potential. Nobody makes mistakes on purpose, so it is best not to shame them. Look for the root causes, learn from mistakes and grow together. 3. Get out of the boardroomAlthough traditional networking has proven to be effective, finding unconventional ways to get to know others can create strong connections. Ashley Curran gave examples like going for a hike, or going out to a pub and experiencing the buzz of a social environment. Creating and more fun environment can create the opportunity to create more genuine and rich connections.Thank you to the Carnegie Initiative, Canadian Tire Corporation, and the amazing panellists Ashley Curran, Marsha-Gaye Knight BSc, PDip, MSc., Lindsay Pennal, Brett Peterson, Bobby Sahni and Biju Pappachan for putting on a great panel and sharing your wisdom to a great discussion.
