Still dealing with the horrendous traffic of Metro Manila? Ease your suffering by taking the LRT instead! Not only you’ll get away from the noise and smoke of the concrete jungle (albeit temporarily), you’ll also travel in relative style and comfort. It pays to know the different LRT stations before embarking on your journey, lest you get lost and have to ask for directions from strangers.

Riding the LRT can be intimidating and overwhelming at first, especially if you’re new to the city. You don’t know where to go and how to buy tickets, among other things. Everything will fall into place, however, when you become familiar with the various LRT stations. You’ll gain the confidence to travel on your own, and at the same time, you don’t have to worry about ending up at the wrong train station.

You don’t have to memorize all the LRT stations one by one, as that would be an almost impossible task considering that there are a total of 33 stations. What’s more important is to know the nearest LRT station in your location, as well as the train stations of places that you regularly visit (such as your office).

What is the LRT?

For Metro Manila denizens, the LRT needs no introduction. LRT stands for the Manila Light Rail Transit System. It consists of two train lines: the LRT-1 (Green Line) that goes from north to south and vice versa, and the LRT-2 (Blue Line) that goes from east to west and vice versa.

The LRT-1 line is supported by 20 train stations while the LRT-2 line is made up of 13 stations, with eight additional LRT-1 stations under construction as of this writing.

Both the LRT-1 and LRT-2 lines are owned by the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), a government corporation under the Department of Transportation (DOTr). However, the LRT-1 line is operated and managed by the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), a joint venture led by Ayala Corporation and Metro Pacific Investments.

The LRT is different from the MRT, which is a single railway line (MRT-3) that follows the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue or EDSA. The MRT-3 line goes from Pasay City to Quezon City (and vice versa) and consists of 13 stations.

The LRT was conceived in 1976 during the Marcos administration, with plans for a street-level railway that was later revised to an elevated system. Construction of the first LRT line started on September 1981 and it was finished three years later. In 1997, construction of the second line began and after several delays, the project was completed six years later in 2003.

Despite overcrowding and occasional technical problems, the LRT remains a popular form of transportation for millions of residents and tourists in Metro Manila. In fact, more than 300,000 commuters ride the LRT everyday and that number is expected to increase once the LRT-1 extension project is completed.

List of LRT-1 Stations in Order

The LRT-1 line (a.k.a. Green Line) is a 19.65-kilometer rapid transit line consisting of 20 stations. The line traverses four cities: Quezon City, Caloocan City, Manila, and Pasay City.

Baclaran Station

The LRT-1 line’s southern terminus, the Baclaran station is named after the popular shopping district nearby. Surrounded by flea markets and shopping malls, this station is the favorite destination of bargain hunters. It’s also a transit point of worshippers going to the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (also known as the Baclaran Church) and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

EDSA Station

Named after the eponymous Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, the EDSA station is a busy terminal in Taft Avenue, just a stone’s throw away from EDSA itself. Since it’s connected to the Taft Avenue MRT station, commuters get off the EDSA station to ride the MRT going north to Quezon City. You can find several bus terminals around the station including those for Victory Liner, Philtranco and Partas.

Libertad Station

One of four LRT stations in Pasay City, the Libertad station serves commuters going to and from the Pasay City Mall and Public Market. The elevated terminal was named after the defunct Libertad Street which was later absorbed by the Antonio Arnaiz Avenue.

Gil Puyat Station

If you’re planning to go to the Makati Central Business District, the Gil Puyat station is your drop-off point. Also known as the Buendia station, this terminal also provides easy access to the World Trade Center and the PICC.

Vito Cruz Station

Situated in Malate, Manila, the Vito Cruz station is one of the most important stations in the LRT-1 line due to its close proximity to major colleges and universities such as the De La Salle University. It’s also near the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, Manila Zoo and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Quirino Station

Also in Malate, the Quirino station is situated in the intersection of Quirino Avenue and Taft Avenue. The elevated station is named after the sixth president of the Philippines, Elpidio Quirino, and is a drop-off point of commuters going to the Malate Church and the Manila Bay.

Pedro Gil Station

The Pedro Gil station acquired its name from the nearby street which used to be called the Herran Street. The station is just walking distance to the popular Robinsons Manila mall, as well as the Philippine General Hospital and the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila campus. Walk a little further and you’ll reach Roxas Boulevard and the Manila Bay Dolomite Beach.

United Nations Station

Visiting Rizal Park or Intramuros? Make your way to the United Nations station because it’s only a few meters away from these historical sites. It is also near several museums and universities. The station got its name from the United Nations Avenue where it’s located in the intersection with Taft Avenue.

Central Terminal Station

As the name implies, the Central Terminal station is the “center” of the LRT-1 line. Located near the banks of the Pasig River, the station is also close to Rizal Park and Intramuros. Other tourist attractions nearby include the Liwasang Bonifacio, Bonifacio Shrine, and Mehan Garden. For leisure and shopping, the SM City Manila is just a few blocks away.

Carriedo Station

Surrounded by four important Catholic churches – Quiapo Church, Santa Cruz Church, San Sebastian Church, and Binondo Church – the Carriedo LRT-1 station swells with passengers during weekends. The station is connected via walkway to shopping centers and department stores. Also nearby is the SM Clearance Outlet or SM Quiapo.

Doroteo Jose Station

Also located in Rizal Avenue, the Doroteo Jose station is near the Manila City Jail. The station serves as a transit point for commuters travelling east and bound for the Recto LRT-2 station. To the west of the station is the famous Divisoria shopping district.

Bambang Station

Close to big hospitals such the San Lazaro Hospital and the Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center, the Bambang LRT-1 station is surrounded by shops selling medical supplies and hospital equipment. It is located several blocks away from the University of Santos Tomas (UST), the oldest university in the Philippines and Asia.

Tayuman Station

Like Bambang station, Tayuman station is near San Lazaro Hospital. After getting off this station, you can shop at the nearby Tayuman Mall or at the SM City San Lazaro which can be accessed via taxi or jeepney.

Blumentritt Station

The Blumentritt station – and the nearby road with the same name – is named after Dr. Jose Rizal’s friend Ferdinand Blumentritt. Adjacent the station is the Blumentritt Market, one of the largest open air markets in Manila. If you want to attend mass, you can walk to the San Roque de Manila Parish a few feet away.

Abad Santos Station

Named after World War II hero Jose Abad Santos, the Abad Santos LRT-1 station is a convenient transit point for commuters going to and from the Manila Chinese Cemetery and Manila North Cemetery. Transportation options such as taxis, jeepneys and tricycles are available outside the station if you want to explore the rest of Tondo, Manila.

R. Papa Station

The R. Papa station, abbreviated for Ricardo Papa, is also a drop-off point for commuters bound to the Manila Chinese Cemetery and Manila North Cemetery.

5th Avenue Station

Located in the intersection of 5th Avenue and Rizal Avenue Extension, the 5th Avenue station is one of only two LRT stations in Caloocan City (the other is Monumento). Commuters bound for La Loma Catholic Cemetery can take a bus or tricycle waiting outside the station.

Monumento Station

Just several meters south of the Monumento Circle and the Andres Bonifacio National Monument, the Monumento station is connected to the SM City Grand Central Mall. Smaller shopping centers such as Victory Central Mall and SM Hypermarket Monumento are also nearby.

Balintawak Station

Completed in 2010, the Balintawak station is located west of the Balintawak Interchange (or Balintawak Cloverleaf). It is the penultimate station before the Roosevelt terminal (now the Fernando Poe Jr. station). To go to Ayala Malls Cloverleaf, you can ride a shuttle service just outside the station.

Fernando Poe Jr. Station

Formerly the Roosevelt station, the Fernando Poe Jr. (FPJ) station is named after the late king of Philippine movies. It is the northern terminus of the LRT-1 line, and will be connected to the MRT-3 line once the North Triangle Common Station or Grand Central Station is completed.

List of LRT-2 Stations in Order

The LRT-2 line (a.k.a. Blue Line) is a 17.6-kilometer rapid transit line with 13 stations. The line goes from east to west (and vice versa) and covers Manila, San Juan, Quezon City, Marikina, and Antipolo, Rizal.

Recto Station

Recto station is the western terminus of the LRT-2 line. Situated near the University Belt and the famous Quiapo district, it is the busiest station during rush hours. Commuters can proceed to the LRT-1 line via the elevated walkway to Doroteo Jose station.

Legarda Station

The Legarda LRT-2 station is located on a street with the same name. The terminal is near the University Belt, and students usually get off this station and walk or take a short jeepney ride to their respective campuses. To the south of this station is the Malacañang Palace, the official residence of the Philippine president.

Pureza Station

Just like Legarda station, the Pureza station is close to several universities which makes it the favorite destination of students. Despite this, the station is one of the least crowded in the LRT-2 line.

J. Ruiz Station

The J. Ruiz LRT-2 station is named after Juan Ruiz, a hero of the Katipunan. It is the only LRT station in San Juan City and as such, provides access to the city’s important landmarks such as the San Juan City Hall and the Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine.

Gilmore Station

Named after former Vice Governor-General Eugene Allen Gilmore, this LRT-2 station is near the Gilmore Commercial Plaza, a haven for computer enthusiasts. A few meters away is the Robinsons Magnolia shopping mall.

Betty Go-Belmonte Station

Formerly the Boston station, the Betty Go-Belmonte station is named after the late wife of former Quezon City mayor Feliciano Belmonte. The station is noted for its cleanliness and quiet environment. It’s close to churches and temples such as the Cubao Cathedral and the Holy Buddhist Temple.

Araneta Center – Cubao Station

Due to its closeness to the Smart Araneta Coliseum and popular malls such as Gateway Mall and Ali Mall, the Araneta Center – Cubao station is one of the busiest stations in the LRT-2 line. Commuters who wish to ride the MRT can walk to the namesake station through Farmer’s Plaza and Gateway Mall.

Anonas Station

Unlike other LRT stations, the Anonas station is not as crowded, which means that you’re more likely to get seated immediately. Adjacent to the station is the Anson Supermart and the St. Joseph Shrine.

Katipunan Station

As the only underground LRT station, the Katipunan station suffers from poor ventilation. Nevertheless, it’s an important drop-off and pick-up point for students from Ateneo de Manila University and UP Diliman.

Santolan Station

The Santolan station used to be the eastern terminus of the LRT-2 line until the east extension was opened in 2021. The station is near SM City Marikina and the Riverbanks Center, both of which can be accessed via a footbridge.

Marikina-Pasig Station

Opened in 2021, the Marikina station is the newest terminal of the LRT-2 line along with the Antipolo station. On the north side of the station is the residential area of Marikina City while on the south side are shopping malls such as Robinsons Metro East and Sta. Lucia East Grand Mall.

Antipolo Station

Presently the only LRT station outside Metro Manila, Antipolo is the last station if you’re coming from Recto. A large and spacious terminal, the Antipolo station is the gateway to Antipolo City and the rest of Rizal province.

If you’re a frequent train commuter like me, take the time to know the LRT schedule and operating hours. One time, I was shopping at the mall and conveniently forgot when the train’s last trip was. As a result, I had to take a Grab ride which was many times more expensive than the LRT fare.

Note: There are no fixed schedules for train intervals in the LRT-1 and LRT-2 lines. Because of this, some trips may take longer than usual.

LRT Fares Table

As a mass transportation system, the LRT offers really low fares compared to other modes of transport such as buses and taxis. For example, you can go from the Baclaran station in Pasay City to the Monumento station in Caloocan City and pay only ₱30. That’s less than ₱2 per kilometer!

How to Ride the LRT

Don’t know how to ride the LRT because you haven’t done it before? No worries, just follow these steps to get to your destination safely:

2. Upon entering the station, find a ticket booth or ticket vending machine (TVM), and then buy a single-journey ticket or top up your stored value card (Beep card). When purchasing a ticket, inform the cashier of your intended destination.
3. Tap your ticket or Beep card on the automatic gate or turnstile.
4. Proceed to the platform and board the train.
5. Once inside the train, take a seat or hold on to the handrails if standing. Listen to the announcement of the next approaching station.
6. Get off the train at the destination station.
7. To exit the station, tap your Beep card at the automatic gate or insert your ticket at the slot or inlet.

Before you ride the LRT, make sure that you already have a ticket or a Beep card with sufficient load balance. Simply proceed to a ticket booth or a ticket vending machine – both of which can be found at any LRT station – to purchase a ticket or reload your Beep card.

How to Buy an LRT Ticket at the Ticket Booth

1. Proceed to the ticket booth at any LRT station.
2. Inform the cashier of your destination station. The cashier will then tell you the fare.
3. Give your payment and receive the change, if any.
4. Get your single-journey ticket. Check the ticket for any errors before proceeding to the automatic gate.

Note: The single-journey ticket is for a single ride only, and can only be used at the station where it was issued. The ticket is only valid at the date of purchase.

How to Buy a Stored Value Card at the Ticket Booth

1. Proceed to the ticket booth at any LRT station.
2. Tell the cashier that you want to buy a stored value card or Beep card. The card costs ₱30 and comes with ₱14 load.
3. Pay for the card and receive the change, if any.
4. Get your Beep card and tap it at the automatic gate to enter the platform.

Note: You can reload your card at a ticket vending machine or through the Beep mobile app. You can also reload your card online using e-wallets such as GCash and Maya, or through banks such as BPi, LandBank and China Bank.

3. Insert paper bills and/or coins. Keep in mind that the machine will not dispense change.

How to Load Your Stored Value Card at a Ticket Vending Machine

1. Go to a ticket vending machine at any LRT station.
2. Put the stored value card or Beep card on the card reader.
3. On the screen, press the “Add Value” button.
4. Insert paper bills and/or coins. Tap “OK” to continue.
5. Wait for the machine to process your payment. Do not remove the card while it’s still processing.
6. When the machine shows the “Transaction Successful” message, tap “OK” to complete the transaction.
7. Remove your card.

Tips and Reminders for Commuters

Get to Know the LRT Stations in Order

As I’ve mentioned, it’s not really necessary to mention all the LRT-1 and LRT-2 stations in their exact order (there’s too many of them). However, if you can have a rough idea of their general locations and their connecting stations, it will greatly help you navigate the LRT smoothly.

Avoid Rush Hours

Rush hours in Metro Manila are notorious for massive crowds and traffic jams. If you can help it, avoid riding the LRT during rush or peak hours as that’s the time when trains are jampacked with passengers eager to get home. Rush hours start at 4 PM but get considerably worse from 5 PM until 8 PM.

Be Respectful and Considerate of Others

In your eagerness and excitement to get to your destination, sometimes you might forget your good manners and etiquette. It happens to the best of us. But keep in mind that your fellow commuters are humans, too, and they deserve your kindness and respect. Before boarding the train, allow the exiting passengers get off first. Prioritize the elderly, disabled or pregnant passengers before taking a seat yourself.

Always Mind the Platform Gap

Although extremely rare, there’s the risk of getting your foot trapped in the gap between the train and the platform. So always mind the gap when boarding the train. Put your cellphone in your pocket or bag to prevent it from falling into the tracks underneath.

Get a Beep Card

A stored value card or Beep card is an absolute necessity since it saves you valuable time. Unless you ride the LRT only once in a blue moon, get a Beep card and load it with sufficient credits to last you for several days or weeks. You don’t even have to reload it at a ticket vending machine because you can do it on the GCash or Maya app.

Keep an Eye on Your Belongings

Public transportation is a magnet for thieves that prey on unsuspecting commuters. The presence of security personnel at LRT stations should give pause to these unwanted elements, but don’t be complacent. Watch your belongings and if possible, place your wallet in your front pocket to deter pickpockets.

The LRT is not perfect and never will be. Trains are subject to routine repairs and maintenance which affect daily operations and inconvenience passengers. Keep yourself updated on the latest news and developments so you’ll know when there are disruptions in the LRT system.
