A federal jury Saturday ordered eight Ku Klux Klansmen, Nazis and police to pay $355,100 to the widow of one of five Communists shot to death in a 1979 anti-Klan rally in Greensboro. The panel, ruling at the end of a 13-week trial of a $48 million civil suit, on Friday had found the eight liable in the wrongful death of Michael Nathan. The panel: rejected charges of conspiracy in the deaths. "No dollar amount can measure the significance of what happened what it meant to reach a major justice coming from a major i injustice," said Marty Nathan, Nathan's widow. The six-member jury Saturday also ordered four of the defendants to pay $38,360 to one wounded demonstrator and two of them to pay $1,500 to another wounded marcher.

On Friday, it had found four Klan and Nazi defendants liable in the assault and battery of Nathan and the two wounded demonstrators. Lawyers for the defendants said they probably would contest the judgments. U.S. District Judge Robert Merhige said he hoped the wounds were healed and the litigation over from the Nov. 3, 1979 rally.

Two criminal trials in the shootings resulted in no convictions. Some Klansmen and Nazis have filed countersuits against some of the plaintiffs in this suit, alleging their rights were violated. "Everyone I think would agree it was a tragedy without regard to said Merhige. don't know of anyone, including the defendants, who doesn't have great sympathy for the situation. But there ought to be an end to this litigation." The jury Friday cleared all 45 defendants, who included Klan and Nazi members, police and federal agents, of a conspiracy to violate the anti-Klan demonstrators' civil rights by disrupting the rally or failing to stop the violence.

The eight ordered to pay $351,500 in Nathan's death were Klansman Eddie Dawson, who the plaintiffs claimed organized a KlanNazi attack on the demonstrators as a Greensboro police informant; David Wayne Matthews; Klansman Jerry Paul Smith; Nazi Roland Wayne Wood; former Nazi Jack Fowler; Nazi Mark Sherer; Greensboro Police Lt. P.W. Spoon, the events commander on the day of the rally; and Greensboro Police Det. J.H. "Rooster" Cooper, who was Dawson's control agent.

People with significant physical or mental handicaps cannot enter the ordained ministry of the American Lutheran Church, the governing body of the Minneapolisbased denomination has ruled. The 41-member church council, in a policy adopted at its meeting in St. Paul on Thursday, said certain disabilities make the work of a parish ministry so difficult that there is "potential of great harm to both members and pastors." Therefore, it said, "pastors are expected to be sufficiently able-bodied, ambulatory and mobile" to carry out the duties of a parish pastor, Handicaps cited included neurological disorders such as multiples sclerosis and physical handicaps such as quadriplegia. People with congenital heart disorders" or cystic fibrosis would also be barred under the ruling. SPRINGFIELD (O.) Home State records are subpoenaed Associated Press State documenting with GovernESM Bank's dealings ment Securities and with state regulators have been subpoenaed by a joint legislative committee investigating the Ohio savings and loan crisis. At the same time, Home State has been sued by Alexander Grant the firm that audited Home State and ESM Government Securities whose failure led to Home State's closing. Grant alleges it was the victim of racketeering by ESM and Home State. State Sen. Richard Finan, R-Cincinnati, committee chairman, said he expects the subpoenas to produce "boxloads" of documents relating to Home State and its investments with ESM.

A subpoena was issued Friday for the records of the Ohio Deposit Guarantee Fund, the private insurance fund for state-chartered thrifts, according to Nick Walker, a' committee staff member. Walker said records will also be sought from the Ohio Division of Savings and Loan Association, requesting the division's audit and examination reports of Home State, dating back to 1973. The policy lists such conditions as arthritis and "psychiatric disorders, especially psychoses and those requiring chronic medication" as a barrier to effective ministry. It also would bar people with "significant substance abuse problems." The policy will take effect immediately following a review by the church's legal counsel. Pastors are expected to be "capable preachers, teachers and communicators of the gospel," the policy states.

Clergy should be able to "speak clearly and ably" in a variety of settings and should be "sufficiently physically and emotionally healthy to have the stamina to conduct ministry," often under difficult and stressful situations, it adds. The statement cites physical mobility as a necessity to the ministry and asserts that some physical disabilities may prevent a pastor from making a rapid response to an emergency situation.
